James Billingslea Mitchell (1844-1891) from Glenville, AL, entered the University in 1859, became a member of the Dialectic Society, and left in 1861 to join the Confederate army, serving with the rank of lieutenant. After the war Mitchell returned to the University for the 1866-67 academic year. Eventually he became a lawyer and member of the Alabama General Assembly. He received his BA degree in 1911 "as of 1863."
